Nepal Health Care Cooperative (NEHCO) Nepal, Manmohan Memorial Teaching Hospital & Medical College with the assistance of Ministry of Health and Population, WHO, Aberdeen University and Robert Gordon University, UK is going to conduct “1st National Training Course in Geriatric Medicine” for Doctors in Nepal with the participation of doctors from government and private sectors from 2nd -7th November 2014 at Soaltee Hotel.

Geriatric medicine (Gerontology) is a specialised branch of General Medicine which deals with the clinical, social, psychological and preventive aspects of the elderly patients. Elderly patients require special care and management of their illnesses. Moreover, the elderly often suffer from concurrent multiple problems which all need to be taken into account in their comprehensive management.

MOHP Nepal has begun some work in this regard and special provision of health services for the elderly is made in the long term health plan. Every district must provide special facilities to the elderly patients, assuring them of the correct diagnoses, appropriate management and care.  The new health policy has also stressed the need for geriatric health care provision.

The elderly population in Nepal is over 8.4%; it was 3.2% ten years earlier. This rapid exponential growth in the elderly population demands a planned and coordinated management plan, allocation of resources and investment in all the sectors of the nation. It is important to be aware of this fact in the proactive planning of the delivery of a comprehensive health service in Nepal.

The proposed course is intended to provide a basic introduction of the specialty of Geriatric medicine with the following objectives:
I. To provide an introduction to the principles and practiceof Geriatric medicine and Gerontology
ii. To promote the concept of holistic medical care for the elderly people
iii. Tounderstandthe basic components necessary to provide effective health
care for the elderly patientsin the District hospitals.

This course is expected to provide a high quality introductory training in the practical aspects of Geriatric Medicine to the established physician in Nepal. There will be reputed national and international faculty providing this training.

The Registration Course fee is Nrs. 12,000 per participants which include all course events, training materials, lunches and refreshments.
